My company always has various events for Halloween including a costume contest. I don’t usually participate unless I just wear a Hawaiian shirt, which I do much of the time anyway. But the day before Halloween when the email announcement went out about the events at work it said, “…where you can be anybody you want and we won’t hold it against you.” And immediately I had a “whisper” that I needed to wear the Awesome shirt. I have worn the shirt to all kinds of events and places, but never to work. I talk about my faith at work and in manager meetings I am known to use a biblical illustration or two. But I have not worn any outward expression of my faith at work. I was hesitate to follow the whisper and even on Halloween morning I had the strong desire to just wear a Hawaiian shirt as usual. But I KNEW that God has given me my marching orders so I wore the shirt. I had talked to a couple of Christians at work about the shirt so this day I modeled it for them and gave them a business card about the Awesome shirt and asked them to get their own. I also had a couple of people tell me how “Awesome” I looked and was able to give a 30 second testimony about what the shirt was all about.
That night we had a pizza party for the small group that meets in my home and we watched a Christian comedian on DVD. I also did something I don’t usually do. Usually my wife hands out the candy for the trick-or-treaters. But when I had finished my pizza I started handing out candy at the door with my Awesome shirt on and wished the kids and parents an awesome day. I don’t know that any great thing will happen in the lives of those who saw me in my shirt, but I sure felt like a barrier had been removed from my life and felt even more open to share my faith at work.
